Course Description:

This course equips nursing home staff with the knowledge and skills to provide person-centered care that honors the complexity of aging individuals. It focuses on understanding human development across the lifespan, recognizing and counteracting ageism, and applying holistic care practices that attend to residents’ biological, psychological, social, spiritual, historical, and cultural identities. The course empowers caregivers to foster dignity, autonomy, and well-being in elderhood.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the stages of human development, with a focus on elderhood.
2. Recognize and challenge ageism in caregiving settings.
3. Implement a holistic care model that supports residents' bio-psycho-social-spiritual health.
4. Honor the historical and cultural identities of residents in their care.
5. Distinguish patterns of growth, maintenance, and decline across the lifespan and integrate this understanding into care practices.
6. Promote resident autonomy, agency, and connection.
